EASY Everything Bagel Seasoning

Aug 3, 2023 | 0 comments

You need just 5 ingredients to make your own everything bagel seasoning. It’s cheaper than buying it from the store, you can control the quantities and it lasts for months. Use it on top of 2 ingredient dough bagels, in everything bagel dip or as a crunchy garnish to just about anything.

If there’s one thing I would always pick up from Trader Joe’s, it was Everything Bagel Seasoning. A gorgeous mix of dried onion, garlic, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and salt, it really is the ultimate seasoning blend that can jazz up any meal.

This recipe is my twist on the original – using a clever hack that means you need fewer ingredients and it tastes JUST as delicious. I like to double (triple, or quadruple!) this recipe to stock myself up whenever I make this, and I highly recommend doing the same. You’ll find you use it all the time when you have it to hand.

My top tip is to buy your ingredients in bulk if you can – often you can find larger packets at health food stores or larger supermarkets.

Ingredients

You just need 5 simple ingredients to make this super flavoursome seasoning blend.

Ingredients for everything bagel seasoning laid out on a grey marble background and labelled.
  • Sesame seeds. Toast your sesame seeds if possible – you’ll get the best flavour that way. I like to toast them right after I buy a new bag, then store them to use as I need them. Just toast them for a couple of minutes in a dry frying pan or skillet over low heat, watching them constantly and stirring them as they can very easily burn.
  • Nigella seeds. I LOVE these as an alternative to both black sesame seeds AND dried minced onion. The seeds have an oniony flavour, and look like the black sesame seeds so you get the best of both worlds.
  • Dried minced garlic. You could also use dried garlic flakes, or garlic powder if you can’t find it.
  • Flaky sea salt. The texture and size of flaky sea salt (I use Maldon) is best here because it matches the other ingredients.

How to make it

It’s literally as easy as mixing everything together in a bowl. That’s it!

Got a question?

Can I use dried onion instead of nigella seeds?

You can! This is the traditional ingredient but for some reason, I find it hard to find and love nigella seeds as a two-in-one alternative.

How long will the seasoning last?

Months, stored in a jar at room temperature.

EASY Everything Bagel Seasoning

  • Total Time: 2 minutes

  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

You need just 5 ingredients to make your own everything bagel seasoning. It’s cheaper than buying it from the store, you can control the quantities and it lasts for months. Use it on top of 2 ingredient dough bagels, in everything bagel dip or as a crunchy garnish to just about anything.

Double (triple, or quadruple!) this recipe to stock yourself up with the best seasoning in town.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ¼ cup toasted white sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 2 tablespoons nigella seeds (or black sesame seeds)
  • 2 tablespoons dried garlic flakes
  • 4 teaspoons flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Mix your seasoning. Place all your ingredients into a small bowl, then mix to combine. Store in a glass jar at room temperature. PRO TIP: For the best flavour, I like to toast my sesame seeds first. To do this, place the sesame seeds into a small pan over low heat, then toast gently for about 5 minutes, stirring the seeds and watching them closely (they can very easily burn). They should start to turn golden and will be smelling lovely and nutty.

Notes

INGREDIENT NOTES: I like to use nigella seeds in place of black sesame seeds and dried minced onion (traditional ingredients in everything bagel seasoning). I struggle to find dried minced onion, and nigella seeds have a lovely oniony flavour that works as a perfect replacement. Plus, they look very similar to black sesame seeds so using them means you can use fewer ingredients for the same result.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Once you have a jar of this beautiful seasoning in your cupboard, you’ll find yourself consistently pulling it out and using it on everything and anything. It’s, of course, wonderful as a topper to homemade bagels – try it on top of the easiest 2 ingredient dough Greek yogurt bagels. But it’s also fabulous as a crunchy topping for salads, pasta or dips (and is key in this four-ingredient everything bagel dip). I also love to pair it with salmon – try it on top of a salmon sushi bake, maple glazed salmon, bang bang salmon or salmon sushi bowls. Or, make your own everything bagel chips.
